Policy Leadership

CLAAD supports a balanced approach to prescription drug policy: efforts to prevent abuse must not impede proper medical practice and patient care. We develop policy recommendations in this area by gathering and synthesizing information, conducting original scholastic research, and drawing on the expertise of our grassroots network and coalition members in the field.

CLAAD’s policy positions are established through a consensus process, in which at least 80 percent of the participants must represent not-for-profit organizations. This rule of governance ensures that the public interest drives CLAAD’s priorities, as opposed to the interests of individual stakeholders.

These policy recommendations are disseminated through CLAAD’s work products which include our newsletter, Policy Brief, CLAAD’s National Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Strategy, public outreach through the news media (see our CLAAD in the News page), and in direct outreach to policy makers.

CLAAD is the only organization that bridges the pain care, abuse prevention and treatment communities to address the prescription drug abuse public health crisis.
