Digital Pill Approved by the FDA Offers Promise for Medication Adherence

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a digital pill – a medication embedded with a sensor – that can help patients take medications as prescribed and tell the health care practitioner whether and when the patient has taken their medication. Although voluntary, bioethicists have raised concerns about patient data privacy and the technology being used as a coercive tool by insurers or as condition of parole or release from a psychiatric facility. However, the new technology offers promise for addressing the massive costs associated with medication nonadherence or noncompliance, and for ultimately improving patient health outcomes. Read more.
