Nurse Licensing Laws Block Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder

Twenty-eight states prohibit nurse practitioners from prescribing buprenorphine unless they are working in collaboration with a doctor who also has a federal license, even though half of all counties in the U.S. do not have a physician with a license to prescribe buprenorphine. These rules exist even after new federal laws allow nurse practitioners and physician assistants to prescribe buprenorphine, one of three Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved medications for opioid use disorder.
