Opioid Abuse Among Pregnant Women Is on the Rise

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) reports that approximately 21,000 pregnant women used opioids for nonmedical reasons in April 2017. The most effective therapy for substance use disorders (SUD) is medication-assisted treatment (MAT), but access to MAT and other therapies is limited; currently only about 10 percent of people in the U.S. with a SUD receives treatment.
