PMPs Are Promising Component of Addressing Opioid Overdose Epidemic

A new study reported in the journal Addictive Behaviors found that state programs that require physicians to check drug registries before writing prescriptions appeared to slash the odds of doctor shopping by 80 percent. The study also reported that states with mandatory prescription monitoring programs (PMPs) reduced the use of painkillers for nonmedical purposes by an average of 20 days a year. One of the authors noted that this indicates that PMPs are a part of the strategy in addressing the opioid overdose epidemic. Read more about this story here, and the study here.
