What should the Pres.-elect Look for in a New CDC Director?

President-elect Trump’s new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director must balance the need for high-quality care for individuals with pain with reducing the opioid overdose epidemic. There are millions of Americans with persistent pain who do not have options for pain relief except from opioids. The CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids recommends evidence-based alternatives to opioids for the treatment of pain, yet most pain patients have been denied coverage for such treatments. The new director should recommend to Congress that payers be mandated to provide a minimum set of health insurance benefits for people with chronic pain, including coverage of effective alternatives to opioids.
