Prior Authorization Standards Are Not Changing Fast Enough

Prior authorization of medical treatments for those with substance use disorders can create an increased risk of death because people with addictions are unlikely to wait the hours or days it takes health insurers to approve the medications, says an addiction and emergency medicine physician. Though some insurers have changed their prior authorization requirements, many still have not, perhaps based on the stigma of addiction which can put a barrier between patients and treatments.
