Scientists have identified that opioids that bind to the kappa receptor, as opposed to the mu receptor which most current opioids have an affinity towards, could provide pain relief without the harmful side effects. However, inadequate understanding of the structure and mechanics of kappa receptors have hindered the development of opioids that bind to this receptor. This week, researchers from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine reported for the first time a structure of the kappa opioid receptor that is bound to a drug molecule, which can provide a template for the creation of safe and effective analgesics.
